About Us
Patients’ Welfare Association is an NGO working in Dr. Ruth K.M. Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi since 1979. At the time of its inception, conditions in Civil Hospital Karachi, as it was known then, were extremely poor. Morbidity and mortality rates were high and a general aura of despair could be felt within its walls. Despite this, then as it is today, this hospital represents a desperate hope of the masses that find it hard to afford better treatment elsewhere.
Our founding members, Dr. Inayat Hussain Thaver, Dr. Iqbal Noor Muhammad and Dr. Abdur Rehman, were undergrad medical students in Dow Medical College at the time of PWA’s inception. Despite having no financial or other resources, they realized that even as students they could contribute to society with whatever skills and knowledge they had acquired so far. All it took for their efforts to bear fruit was to be sincere, compassionate and to believe in becoming the vehicle of change; and thus, that is what happened
What began as a single cabinet of medicine funded from their own lunch money, today proudly stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the biggest, most well-funded, highly developed organizations and institutions.
Yet behind all of this success, the fundamentals of PWA have not changed. Its members purely consist of students currently enrolled in Dow Medical College and are known simply as “volunteers” for this title represents the true essence of PWA i.e. to volunteer or give freely towards the benefit of others, whatever we can spare, be it time, money or our attention. A volunteer of PWA is only required to be sincere and passionate in fulfilling whatever task he is assigned; something that is simply expressed in our slogan “We Feel We Serve”.
Lastly, when they began this work, our founders quickly realized the unparalleled benefit of teamwork. Thus, they inculcated this virtue in all subsequent generations of volunteers, resulting in what started as a team of 3 best friends now becoming the ‘PWA Family’ spanning 39 years of volunteers and still growing. That is why at PWA we say,”Together We Can Make A Difference”.
